L’edificio a tre piani, detto la  “Zecca”, fu progettato da Jacopo Sansovino (1486 – 1570), che gli conferì un carattere difensivo – del tutto consono alla sua funzione: qui fu coniata la moneta più stabile del medioevo e fino ai tempi moderni, il veneziano “Zecchino”, un ducato d’oro,  contenente una quantità d’oro che non fu mai modificata. La Biblioteca Marciana è adiacente alla Zecca, ma è più piccola e accurata nei dettagli, anche quest’edificio fu realizzato su disegno del Sansovino. Tra la Biblioteca e Palazzo Ducale ci sono le due colonne, che formano una porta, preludio all’impianto monumentale di Piazza San Marco, su cui si trovano i due patroni della Repubblica Marinara, San Teodoro (a sinistra) e San Marco (a destra, a forma di leone alato).

Die dreigeschossige Münze, “Zecca”, wurde von Jacopo Sansovino (1486-1570) entworfen, der ihr einen wehrhaften Charakter gab – ihrer Funktion durchaus angemessen: hier wurde die stabilste Münze des Mittelalters bis in die Neuzeit geprägt, der venezianische “Zecchino”, ein Golddukat, dessen Goldgehalt nie geändert wurde. An die Münze schließt sich kleiner und filigraner die Markusbibliothek an, auch ein Entwurf aus der Feder Sansovinos. Zwischen dieser und dem Dogenpalast die zwei Säulen, welche gleichsam ein Tor, einen Auftakt zur monumentalen Anlage des Markusplatzes bilden, bekrönt von den beiden Patronen der Seerepublik, dem Heiligen Theodorus (links) und dem Heiligen Markus (rechts, in Löwenform).

The three-storey building housing the Mint, “Zecca”, was designed by Jacopo Sansovino, who gave it a defensive character – entirely appropriate to its function: the most stable currency of the Middle Ages and of modern times, the Venetian “zecchino”, a gold ducat, whose gold content was never changed, was minted here. St. Mark’s Library is attached to the Mint and is a smaller and more delicate building, also by Sansovino. Between the Biblioteca Marciana (Saint Mark’s Library) and the Doge’s Palace there are two columns, both crowned by the patrons of the Maritime Republic, Saint Theodorus (left) and Saint Mark (right, in the shape of a lion).The gallows of the Republic of Venice traditionally stood between the two pillars.
