Vista dalle gondole antistanti al Palazzo Ducale fino all’isola del monastero di San Giorgio Maggiore con un piccolo porto per barche a vela sulla sinistra. Le gondole erano il mezzo di trasporto veneziano per eccellenza. La barca ha una forma molto particolare che ha a che fare con la natura della città lagunare: i rii stretti erano le principali vie di traffico a Venezia e le barche veneziane dovevano essere adattate a queste condizioni e quindi dovevano essere strette. La gondola doveva essere lunga per consentire il trasporto di merci e persone in una barca stretta. La gondola mantiene fino ad oggi questa forma: è lunga ed è stretta. Inizialmente non era specificato il colore della gondola ma poi fu fissato con una legge del 1562 che le gondole dei veneziani dovessero essere nere.

Gondeln waren das venezianische Transportmittel par excellence. Das Boot hat eine ganz besondere Form, die mit der Beschaffenheit der Lagunenstadt zu tun hat: die engen Flüsse waren die Hauptverkehrswege in der Lagunenstadt, und die venezianischen Boote mussten von Anfang an dieser Gegebenheiten angepaßt und darum schmal sein. Damit in diesem schmalen Boot auch etwas transportiert werden konnte, musste die Gondel lang sein. Bis heute hat die Gondel diese Form: sie ist lang, und sie ist schmal. Zunächst war die Farbe der Gondel nicht festgelegt, dann aber wurde mit einem Aufwandgesetz (1562) formuliert, dass die Gondeln der Venezianer schwarz sein mussten.

The gondolas were the Venetian means of transport par excellence. The boat has a very special shape due to the nature of the lagoon city: the narrow canals were the main traffic routes, so that the Venetian boats had to adapt to these conditions from the start and for this reason had to be narrow. To optimise the load being transported, the gondola had to be long. The gondola kept this shape to this day: it is long and narrow. At first the colour of the gondola was not fixed, but then it was decided by law (1562) that the Venetian gondolas had to be black.
